The winner is … OPTIMA®

Large-scale laboratory test confirms: OPTIMA® batteries from Johnson Controls set new standards in the caravan sector with regards to economy and efficiency

The OPTIMA® YellowTop® from Johnson Controls is the number 1 for motor homes and caravans. That is the result of the large-scale laboratory test undertaken by the trade journals Reisemobil International and Camping, Cars & Caravans. The amazing fact: The OPTIMA® went into the competition with the lowest nominal capacity of 75 ampere hours and was, by a long way, the smallest battery weighing just 27.2 kilograms. However, in contrast to its competitors, it delivered nearly 100 percent of its nominal capacity and therefore just as much useful energy as the larger and heavier opponents. For comparison: Gel batteries can only deliver around 60 percent of the specified output.

Small, but oh boy!

"Even though the OPTIMA® started with the lowest nominal capacity in the test, it delivered great energy volumes and long operating times in almost all tests. Thanks to super rapid charging and high cycle stability, it won a well-earned test victory", stated the concluding test evaluation by the experts.
Even the branch giant Truma, which has been offering solutions for over 60 years in the caravan sector, is using the OPTIMA® YellowTop® in its entire Mover packages and is even selling the batteries itself. The battery was the clear winner on points in Truma test series.
The secret of so much performance: The patented SpiralCell® technology from Johnson Controls – currently the state-of-the-art battery technology for applications in the caravanning sector. This SpiralCell® technology means that the OPTIMA® YellowTop® is not just maintenance-free, powerful and robust, but also economic, environmentally-friendly and efficient.
The underlying principle: Instead of the flat plates in normal batteries, two thin, highly-pure lead plates are wound into a spiral together with a glass fleece. "The spiralling design of the plates, the solid cast cell connections and the higher electrolyte density all contribute to an extremely low internal resistance so that the battery can accept powerful currents. The winding also allows the use of nearly pure lead, which is reflected in the durability and in over 1000 guaranteed charging and discharging cycles. This combination of high current capability and cycle strength is so far unique", explained Thomas Ruthenberg, Marketing Manager for OPTIMA® Batteries. As the battery maintains a high voltage during discharge, up to 100% of its stored energy can be used. All this saves money over the long-term and protects the environment.
